Bedard’s Breakdown: ‘Playing the kids’ may have caused issues for Patriots defense early vs. Rams

Note: Due to the Patriots' Thursday night game and compressed timetable, we won't have the regular NFL Notebook. Instead, we'll incorporate Sunday's games into our notes and have them by Monday morning.

At various points this season, the call has come from a lot of people — including myself — to just play the kids on defense.

Kyle Dugger looks like he has a jetpack strapped to his back at times. Anfernee Jennings appears to be strong with some explosiveness. Josh Uche, to a lesser degree because he has yet to threaten an early-down role in this defense, has also shown some promise with his suddenness at the point of attack and quick-area burst.

With this Patriots defense looking slow and outclassed at times this season, you had to wonder why Bill Belichick and his defensive coaches just didn't put the young legs on the field.

We may have gotten our answer in Thursday night's 24-3 loss to the Rams that wasn't nearly that close.
