WHAT’S UP
The Red Sox have won six of the their last seven games and will look to make it four wins in a row as they face the last place Athletics.
Boston won the series opener 7-3 after the bats came alive early in the second inning. Yu Chang plated two runs in his return off the injured list. Meanwhile, Nick Pivetta tossed five innings in relief, allowing just four hits and three runs (two earned) while fanning eight batters.
The Sox will hand the ball to left-hander James Paxton, who was activated off the Paternity List on Friday afternoon. Paxton comes off an impressive start against the Blue Jays last weekend tossing 7 ⅔ shutout innings.
Big Maple has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his last nine starts. Including shutout baseball or one run allowed in five of those starts.
In their last eight games, Sox pitchers have posted a 3.38 ERA (27 ER) over 72 innings. During that span, the starters (including openers) are 3-1 with a 2.52 ERA and .205 opponent AVG (10 ER/35.2 IP, 26-for-127).
Jarren Duran will be in center field and will look to extend his hitting streak to five games. Duran had an RBI single during the Sox’ five-run second inning on Friday night, he also triple and scored in the seventh inning. It was Duran’s second triple of the season and he is one away from tying his career high (three).
Justin Turner looks to make it eight straight games with a hit. The veteran extended his hitting streak on Friday night after his RBI single in the second inning Friday night. Turner has 10 RBI during his latest hitting streak (13-for-28).
The Red Sox scored five runs on five hits in the second inning last night to take a 5-0 lead. It was their 16th inning this season with five-plus runs scored, which is second most in MLB behind TEX (19).
Boston has scored 17 runs in the last 2 games, following a season-long streak of six consecutive home games with fewer than five runs scored (13 total runs).
PRE-GAME NOTES
The Red Sox made two roster moves prior to the game. The club activated left-hander reliever Joely Rodríguez off the injured list and optioned right my Justin Garza.
Rodríguez has been out since June 4 with left shoulder inflammation. The 31-year-old has been on the IL twice during the season, three times total when he began the year sidelined with an oblique injury.
The southpaw has been relatively ineffective to begin his Sox career. He’s surrendered eight earned runs in four innings (18.00 ERA) while allowing seven hits and walking six batters.
Garza was claimed off waivers from the Angels on April 28 and has pitched to 6.11 ERA with the club. He’s being lambasted for a 10.57 ERA (9 earned runs in 7 ⅔ innings) since June 13.
UP NEXT
The Red Sox will close out their six-game home stand against the AL West cellar dweller Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon. The club has not yet announced a starting pitching for the game.
