BSJ Daily Briefing 02.05.20: You knew it was coming, but trading Mookie Betts still feels wrong

Good afternoon!

A few random thoughts while I wonder if John Henry is ready for this backlash...

• So the Red Sox, that team you pay all that money to for seats, overpriced beers and ridiculous food prices, decided that their bottom line is worth more than repaying your loyalty in trading Mookie Betts and David Price to the Dodgers.


• They seemed to get back a couple of promising players but come on, this just feels wrong.


• You knew something was up when John Henry, after winning the World Series, mentioned something about how the various partners had forgone their dividends to win it all. The other shoe was going to drop. The rich were going to get richer.


• But how have you so mismanaged things — every team knows when they are going to have to overpay their superstars — that you have to trade away one of your best homegrown players ever just for salary relief? And you did it too late to really get anything for him.


• Just a terrible job all around by the Red Sox. If you thought last season and the disinterest was bad, you haven't seen anything yet.


• Yes, I'm glad Price is gone and he's probably thrilled.


• I dove into the film to dissect exactly how well Jimmy Garoppolo played, and what that might mean for his future there. Man, he didn't see a lot of open receivers, especially George Kittle.


• Bruins won ... man, them and the Celtics are heating up.


• NBA trade deadline is coming ... but Clint Capela went elsewhere late last night.
