The Patriots waived receiver Dontrelle Inman on Sunday, according to league sources, but it wasn't to add Josh Gordon to the roster quite yet.
Gordon was initially placed on the non-football injury list and doesn't count against the roster limit until he is put on the active roster.
Mike Reiss reported that Inman requested his release, and the Patriots accommodated that request.
BSJ Analysis
Not a huge surprise. Inman got off to a slow start with the Patriots and while he showed some flashes, he never really caught up to some of the others he was battling.
Inman played on a total of 45 snaps in the first two exhibitions. He had three catches for 40 yards. With the emergence of Jakobi Meyers and the reinstatement of Gordon, Inman probably saw himself getting released. Requesting his release allows Inman to find a better competitive situation with two preseason games to play.
Inman will have a dead cap hit of $200,000 but save the Patriots about $673,750.
It's not a surprise that Gordon wasn't immediately reinstated to the active roster. Patriots probably want to gauge where he is before taking the next step.
