BSJ Match Report: Revolution 1, Red Bulls 0 - A much-needed 3 points gets the Revs out of basement taken at Gillette Stadium (Revolution)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGH — All you need to know about the Revolution’s 1-0 win over New York Red Bulls Saturday night in quickie form, complete with BSJ insight and analysis:

HEADLINES

Penilla comes on late, gives New England three big points: Ecuadorian import Cristian Penilla hasn’t had many opportunities to get out there in the last month, and when he has, his touches have not necessarily been clean. But as he entered Saturday’s match with New York in the 71st minute, the light bulb went on and he capitalized on the chance barely three minutes later. On a counterattack starting on a Carles Gil dispossession, Penilla took Juan Fernando Caicedo’s well-weighted pass and slotted home beyond Luis Robles, putting the Revolution ahead by a goal to nil, and that held up through the last quarter-hour plus. It’s Penilla’s first of the year and 13th as a member of the Revs. New England leap-frogged New York into ninth (2-5-1, 7 points) with its second win of the season.

TWO TAKES THAT SWEENS MAY REGRET LATER

Not to marginalize this much-needed triumph in any way, but I want to throw this out there:

Even though the win is a good thing, changes still need to be made here in Foxborough.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

“Just play simple, we did everything simple. As we felt under pressure, we put the ball on over the full backs, and we made them face their own goal. I think when the time was right, we played out — I think I played out, maybe overplayed out, once or twice — but overall, I just think we did the simple things right and ultimately, it comes down to winning the second balls and winning the battle in the trenches.”
