Received a lot of good questions this week on a variety of topics, including compensatory picks, RFA tenders, Josh Gordon, Adrian Clayborn, and much more. Let's get to it.
Question from Twitter follower philw1776:What are the chances that the compensation committee or whomever is in charge of this formula (compensatory pick) will tweak it given the patriots skilled playing of the game?
A follow-up question from Twitter follower Alex Beam:Cody Hollister is ERFA no?
Question from Twitter follower Ryan Ciccarelli: what is edelman's cap number? Seems like with the rumored WR prices including Amendola he might be the best deal in the entire NFL
Question from Twitter follower Ryan Ciccarelli: Why are some players RFA and others UFA. Is it based on round drafted?
- ERFA - Zero to two accrued seasons
- RFA - exactly three accrued seasons
- UFA - four or more accrued seasons
Question from Twitter follower Dylan:Is Josh Gordon's RFA tender guaranteed? if he stays suspended and pats release him, do we get it back?
Question from Twitter follower TheRealBillBelichick:Does Josh Gordon’s cap hit count while he’s suspended?
Answer: Yes, it does. ERFA/RFA tenders as well as franchise/transition tags count against the cap as soon as they are made.
Question: hi Miguel, I have a question for you. What are the implications of a team restructuring a player to convert their base salary into bonus? What effect does this have on the cap down the road? Sorry if you have answered this before, I’m new here
Question from Twitter follower Nader:Question:Quick question on a thought that just popped up! Can you envision the Pats to start backloading contracts this year with the consideration that McCourty, Hightower, Gronk, Chung, Edelman, and Brady* (thanos), could potentially be coming off the books in the next 2 yrs?
Question from Twitter follower Andrew Bourne: What would they save if they cut Adrian Clayborn?
Question from BSJ subscriber panthius: I am curious what the salaries of Joe Thuney and Elandon Roberts were prior to the PPE. Hopefully they will ink Thuney to a nice extension to keep him here for the foreseeable future before he hits free agency. As for Roberts, could they get another linebacker for less money that doesn’t consistently overrun the play.
Question from Twitter follower Chad: can you explain what Antonio browns 21.2MM in dead money is? I thought it was $$ guaranteed to him but ESPN said that there was no guaranteed money left on his contract. Thanks!
Question from Twitter follower Brian: could Pats offer Bell something like $3-4m a year, and in year 1 offer him $1m per game bonus ? Wouldnt that count as Not likely to be earned, therefore not against the cap, given he didnt play lasy year ?
Question: What is your current Patriots 2019 salary cap space number?
