Patriots, Shaq Mason reportedly agree on five-year contract extension

The Patriots and guard Shaq Mason have agreed on a five-year, $50-million contract extension, according to a report from NFL Network.

The deal includes $23.5-million guaranteed.

Those numbers could very well change once the final numbers are in, as agents are known to inflate certain aspects of the deal.

Mason has been the Patriots' offensive lineman the past two seasons and was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He was going to make $1.907 million this season.

BSJ Analysis: Not top of market, but fair to both sides



Once the annual average value is in, this deal is likely to slot in behind Zack Martin ($14 million), Andrew Norwell ($13 million), Kevin Zeitler ($12 million), Trai Turner ($11.25 million), Kelechi Osemele ($11.7 million), Gabe Jackson ($11 million), and David DeCastro and Kyle Long ($10 million).

Have a feeling it will come in at $10 million, or just below.

That's actually fair and probably an accurate slotting of where Mason, who has some room to grow as a pass blocker, is in terms of the better guards in the league. Mason could have gone to market, but a few calls to front office executives found the outside perspective on Mason's talents surprisingly understated.
