Slide reaches seven: The Revolution’s winless skid is now at seven matches and counting following Sunday night’s mainly dreadful performance — on national television, no less — in Washington. The Boys In Blue fell behind 1-0 early, would try to gain a foothold in the match in the early portions of the second half, but fell apart with lackadaisical defending in the midfield on the goal that put the nail in the coffin. New England (7-9-8, 29 points) is still in seventh place, but barely: DC, meanwhile, captured nine critical points in the span of eight days, and now sits two points adrift of the Revs with 27 -- with two matches in hand.
Caldwell sent off: Braintree’s Scott Caldwell had played his rear end off Sunday, but his aggressive play cost New England dearly in the second half. With the Revs trying to regain some energy thanks to Brad Friedel yanking an over-aggressive Juan Agudelo in favor of Wilfried Zahibo at the half, it appeared as though the Revolution were going to go for it. But Friedel didn’t pull Caldwell when he went into Ted Unkel’s book in the 56th minute. 17 minutes later… clatter, out comes the second yellow, and SC6 gets an early shower, the Revs to 10 men for the remainder.
Sub Steiber nails it almost at the death: Zoltan Steiber added the second goal in the 89th minute as he would get behind the Revolution defense — at three men by that point as Friedel took off left back Brandon Bye for striker Brian Wright in the 80th — and calmly left-foot it past Matt Turner to wrap it up. Key in that whole sequence? Junior Moreno’s pass from the midfield, which saw several red and white-clad statues standing around him, not reacting.
