Welcome to first and 10, a roundup of all the (mostly) Patriots-related news you need to start your Thursday. Grab your coffee and let’s get to it.
This week's edition of Throwback Thursday takes us to the early 1990s, and a pretty great highlight video featuring our buddy Scott Zolak, which was put together by the folks at Channel 5 -- it looks like it was an old episode of "Patriots All-Access." ("He's just got to understand there's a little difference between being the quarterback and being the Zo. You know what I mean?")
Happy 49th Birthday to former Patriots' first-round pick Eugene Chung. Taken 13th overall by New England in the 1992 draft, he's now an assistant coach with the Eagles.
Now, on with the links...
1. I talk to former Boston College coach Tom O'Brien about Brian Flores and what sort of player he was, as well as how his time at The Heights shaped him as a defensive leader. “We knew we had to get him on the field more,” recalled O’Brien. “What we did that year was that (defensive coordinator) Frank Spaziani had a different way to play defense, at least at that time. What we did was use a 4-2-5, and Brian ended up playing a hybrid nickel back and linebacker for us. He was basically half a safety and half a linebacker.”
2. Miguel takes a look at what sort of ramifications Zack Martin's $84 million extension could have for the Patriots and Shaq Mason, whose rookie deal is up at the end of the 2018 season.
3. Phil Perry examines the state of the Patriots' offensive line heading into summer break.
4. Moose and Glenn ("The Camera Guys") get some one-on-one time with Robert Kraft in the name of an excellent cause.
5. Looks like the Patriots aren't going to get in any joint practices with the Eagles this summer.
6. Bob Harig of ESPN has the scoop of Tom Brady getting in a round of golf with Rickie Fowler before the start of the U.S. Open this week. "I'll tell you what, Tom Brady can putt,'' Fowler said Wednesday. "So if I can take that into this week, I think that's one thing I took off of him that will help me.''
7. Chris Simms says there are people around the league who have been suspicious about Julian Edelman for a long time.
8. Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Carson Wentz are the leaders right now when it comes to MVP odds, according to Oddshark.
9. Detroit receiver Marvin Jones, Jr. talks about adjusting to former Patriots DC Matt Patricia.
10. Our buddies Don Banks and Nick Stevens from the "Cover 2" podcast go around the AFC East with insight from Jets beat reporter Rich Cimini from ESPN, John Murphy (the play-by-play radio voice of the Bills) and Armando Salguero from the Miami Herald.
Extra Point: A preview of Brady's sit-down with Oprah.
