BSJ Daily Briefing 04.04.18: Patriots off the mat and back in a power position taken at BSJ Headquarters (Regular Features)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

Good morning!

A few random thoughts while I trying to figure out if Bill Belichick is going to own the draft now that he has five Top 100 picks, or merely lease it....

  • Pretty much laid out my thoughts on the trade — I still can't believe Belichick got the Rams to give up No. 23 for a receiver (who's not a No. 1) they're going to have to pay at least $25 million for the next two seasons — in this column. And I'll have some further thoughts coming up.

  • In case you missed it, make sure you check out PatsCap's reaction to the trade, which includes possible contract extensions for two very important players: Trey Flowers and Shaq Mason.

  • This is all quite a turnaround from where the region has been since The Super Bowl That Must Not Be Mentioned. Seemed like many people were a bit disillusioned and not sure where the franchise was going. That may still be the case, but this is just the type of move you need to shake the hangover from a disappointing Super Bowl loss. That malaise is real for the runner-up, and it can linger unless you change things up. Some young talent should be coming to New England, which could be a needed jolt.

  • Boy, the Bruins stunk up the joint in Tampa Bay. Looked like Tuukka Rask had one of his old, 'I shouldn't even be out here today' outings, which is fine but not all that comforting heading into the postseason.

  • Almost pulled off my trifecta from yesterday but the Celtics let me down. Should have seen that coming. There's no way they could have kept that up without Kyrie Irving. Dumb, Greg. Dumb.

  • So, after six games, the Red Sox are now on pace to run in 162 outs — double their ridiculous 81 from a season ago. Who's the new baserunning coach, Usain Bolt? If the Sox pull that stuff in their return to Fenway, they're going to hear it. That's why I love Fenway.

  • Speaking of short honeymoons:

And away we go....
