Good morning!
A few random thoughts while I wonder why Bill Belichick is always in a better mood in front of the media at Super Bowls than he is at Gillette...
- So the Chiefs got a third-round pick and the league's sixth-best corner (according to PFF) with outside/slot versatility in Kendall Fuller for Alex Smith, who's ceiling is a solid B as a quarterback. Yeah, sure, the Patriots maxed out their value for Jimmy Garoppolo. Sure. Uh-huh. Nothing to see there.
- If I'm a Redskins fan, I am not happy. Top cornerbacks don't grow on trees, and now I have to watch Smith go 10-6 or 11-5 every season with a loss in the divisional round at home. Fabulous.
- I'm not saying the Redskins were wrong for not paying Kirk Cousins — they screwed that whole deal up a while ago — but why did Scot McCloughan lose his GM job again? He was the one guy in the building that wanted to stop that franchise tag nonsense on Cousins and got overruled.
- So John Elway will likely get his QB in Cousins (why would you go to the Jets or Bills?), but he still wasted two seasons of a great defense. That's still a rebuild.
- Roger Goodell is impressed with the Patriots' dominance of the NFL, and the Krafts were one of the only owners to attend Goodell's press conference. Yeah, that will go over well in other NFL cities. I can hear the moaning from Pittsburgh.
- So Rob Gronkowski can take part in the Madden Bowl against LeGarrette Blount on Tuesday night, but he can't speak to reporters because he's in concussion protocol? I don't get it.
- Since I've spent a lot of time in South Florida, I'm familiar with mall walkers, but the people in Minnesota take it to a new level in Mall of America. One lady started chatting me up and told me I had to eat walleye before I left. Had to. Alrighty then.
