FOXBOROUGH — This time around, there was no 25-point lead, no crazy comeback, and no dramatic, overtime finish. In their first meeting since Super Bowl LI, the Patriots effectively smothered the Falcons on both sides of the ball, coming away with a 23-7 win Sunday night at Gillette Stadium.
Tom Brady tossed a pair of touchdown passes (one to Brandin Cooks and another to James White) and went 21-for-29 for 249 yards while Dion Lewis had 13 carries for 76 yards. And the New England defense stifled the high-powered Atlanta passing game all night -- Matt Ryan went just 23-for-33 for 233 yards and a touchdown. Julio Jones had nine catches for 99 yards and a touchdown, but the bulk of that production came when the game was far out of reach.
The fog rolled in just before halftime, and added a surreal air to things for much of the night. But while the Patriots’ defense appeared to struggled on its first series of the third quarter, New England was able to keep the Falcons out of the end zone while the game was in the balance. The key stop came in the fourth quarter when Kyle Van Noy sniffed out a jet sweep and came away with a tackle for loss on a fourth-down play that ended up giving the ball back to the Patriots on downs.
A late Falcons touchdown on a pass play from Ryan to Jones broke a string of five-plus quarters where the Patriots did not give up a touchdown, but that ended the scoring on the night for both teams.
Game updates from Price...
11:25 p.m.: That's it. Patriots win 23-7.
11:17 p.m.:
By my calculations, the Patriots went 98:09 of game action between allowing touchdowns. (2nd Q vs. Jets/4th Q vs. Atl.)

It'll be tough when the #Patriots have draft picks taken away for this fog, but they'll power through.
