FINAL: Red Sox 6, Miami Marlins 5 (12) - Sox Spoil Pivetta's Outstanding Performance taken at BSJ Headquarters (Red Sox)

Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox (47-39) complete the sweep in Miami with a sweat inducing 6-5 win over the Marlins (30-57).

The first two Boston runs of the game came by way of a David Hamilton and Tyler O'Neill double steal, which was followed by a Rafael Devers groundout to first that allowed Hamilton to score in the first and the sixth inning. They wouldn't score again until the top of the eleventh, when Jarren Duran would score from third on a throwing error from Xavier Edwards, and an Enmanuel Valdez single to right which brought O'Neill home. In the top of the twelfth, David Hamilton would ground out on a check swing to third that allowed Romy Gonzales to score, and Ceddane Rafaela would score on a Tyler O'Neill double to left center. O'Neill went 3-5 today with that double, a walk, and two RBI.

Nick Pivetta threw an amazing seven innings, giving up just one hit on a Jesus Sanchez triple in the bottom of the seventh. Pivetta fanned ten this afternoon, tying his season high from his first start of the season against the Mariners in March. Justin Slaten would come in to pitch the eighth, and he would be responsible for the Marlins two runs that tied the game, with RBI singles from Jazz Chisholm Jr and Bryan De La Cruz, which were let up by Brennan Bernardino. Kenley Jansen would pitch the ninth, where he allowed a lead off double but got out of the jam unscathed, which was made possible by Jarren Duran's game saving throw home to get Jesus Sanchez out at the plate. The Sox would go in to the bottom of the eleventh up 4-2, but that lead only lasted two pitches as Zack Kelly would give up a 431 foot two run home run to Jesus Sanchez to tie the game 4-4. The Sox would again lead by two going in to the bottom of the twelfth, and Greg Weissert came in to close it out. He allowed Vidal Brujan to score off of a sac fly to center field, but shut the door after that with two fly outs to end the game.

My Player of the Game: Nick Pivetta - Pivetta seems to enjoy pitching on the road more than he does at Fenway, which isn't too ideal, but when he has performances like this, who are we to judge. Another stellar Fourth of July outing from Pivetta, similar to the one he had in 2021 against Oakland where he went seven innings and struck out ten there as well.

The Sox will take a flight to New York for a weekend matchup with the Yankees, who just got swept by the Reds at home this afternoon in an 8-4 loss. Probable starters for tomorrow's 7:05 p.m. start are Tanner Houck (7-6, 2.67 ERA) and Nestor Cortes (4-7, 3.51 ERA).

WHAT'S UP

The Red Sox clinched the series win last night at MIA, 7-2. Brayan Bello (6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 SO) recorded the win in his longest start of the season. 5 different Boston hitters recorded multiple hits (Devers, O'Neill, Rafaela, Wong, and Yoshida).

Boston ranks in MLB's top 5 in triples (T-2nd, 23), XBH (T-5th, 272), and doubles (T-5th, 153). BOS ranks in the AL's top 5 in OBP (2nd, .323), AVG (2nd, .254), OPS (4th, .745), and SLG (5th, .421). Last night, the Red Sox snapped a streak where they homered in 12 consecutive games (22 total HR), their longest streak since going 18 straight games from 8/11-29 last season.

The Sox' 26-16 (.619) record on the road is the 3rd-best in MLB behind BAL (26-14, .650) and NYY (30-18, .625). They lead the AL in AVG on the road (.260), rank 2nd in road OBP (.328) behind NYY (.329) and rank 3rd in road SLG (.433) and OPS (.762). Boston has a .154 higher win percentage on the road (.619) than at home (.465)...That's the largest difference in MLB among teams who have a better road record.

Jarren Duran ranks 4th in MLB and 2nd among outfielders in bWAR (4.6). He's the 1st American League player ever to record 100 hits, 10 triples, 10 HR and 20 stolen bases before the All-Star break...The only NL player to do so was NYM's José Reyes in 2008. Duran leads MLB in triples (10)...He leads the AL in doubles (tied, 23) and ranks 3rd in hits (101), 4th in XBH (43), T-5th in total bases (174), and T-6th in runs scored (58). Since 6/1, he's hitting .350 with a 1.032 OPS and 26 runs scored (41-for-117, 7 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 12 BB, 10 SB).

Connor Wong is on a career-long 17-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in MLB...He's reached base safely in 18 straight, the longest active streak in the AL. He's batting .333 with a .405 OBP and an .875 OPS over his streak (22-for-66, 7 R, 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 6 BB). Wong leads MLB catchers in AVG (.326; min. 100 PA)...He ranks 3rd among that group in OBP (.382, 2nd in AL) and 4th in OPS (.845, 2nd in AL).

Rafael Devers is 1 hit shy of 1,000 in his career...He's also 3 HR shy of tying Jason Varitek (193) for 11th-most in Red Sox history. He would become the 33rd player to record 1,000 hits for the Red Sox, but only the 6th to do so before turning 28 years old, joining Xander Bogaerts and HOF'ers Bobby Doerr, Jim Rice, Tris Speaker and Carl Yastrzemski. He ranks among AL leaders in SLG (3rd, .575), OPS (4th, .947), and OBP (9th, .372). Devers leads MLB 3rd basemen in SLG, OPS, and wRC+ (153), while ranking 2nd in fWAR (2.9) and HR (18) behind CLE's José Ramírez (3.1 fWAR, 23 HR)...He also leads AL 3rd basemen in walks (36) and is 2nd in OBP.
