Trevor's Game Notes

Stolen Victory: The Red Sox came back to defeat the Reds in game 2 of their series in Cincinnati. After being down 3-0, Boston got on the board with a solo home run from Dom Smith.

In the 6th inning, Wilyer Abreu and Connor Wong hit back-to-back doubles, cutting the lead down to 1 run. With Wong's RBI double, he extended his hit streak to 12 games. Jarren Duran also extended his hit streak to 12 games. He contributed to Boston's comeback in the 8th inning with his 2nd single of the game. After Refsnyder's pinch hit, RBI single to tie the game, Duran would score the game winning run off a sac fly to left field from Rafael Devers.

Game-winning robbery: To secure the game for the Red Sox, Jarren Duran made a highlight real play catching what would've been a game-tying home run from Stuart Fairchild.

Shut Down Bullpen: Nick Pivetta was the only Red Sox pitcher to allow any runs in the game, as he would allow  2 home runs in the 5 innings he pitched. After Pivetta was pulled from the game, a plethora of Red Sox relievers made appearances to keep the Reds with 3 runs. Brennan Bernardino, Cam Booser, Greg Weissert, Zack Kelly, Chris Martin, and Kenley Jansen all made short relief appearances to help the Red Sox comeback in this game. It looks like Cora will be using an opener in tomorrow's game, which is why no Boston reliever went multiple innings.

The Red Sox will finish the series against Cincinnati tomorrow at 1:40 p.m. If the Red Sox do go with an opener, the likely starter would be Brennan Bernardino.

WHAT'S UP

The Red Sox snapped a 5-game winning streak last night in a 5-2 loss against the Reds. Kutter Crawford allowed 3 home runs, but managed to pitch into the 7th inning holding the Reds to 3 runs.

Boston entered ranked first in the majors in both batting average (.294) and on-base percentage (.369) during June. Despite this, they only managed to get 2 hits in the game. Jarren Duran (2-for-4, R, HR, RBI) and Connor Wong (2-for-4, R, HR, RBI) both hit solo HR to extend their career-long hitting streaks to 11 games.

Wilyer Abreu will bat second in the lineup and play right field for the Red Sox on Saturday in his return from the IL. Abreu had been on the 10-day injured list since June 4 with a sprained right ankle. He was activated this afternoon. Boston optioned Bobby Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox’ 26-man roster no longer includes an obvious first base option vs. left-handed starters now that both right-handed hitters Bobby Dalbec and Garrett Cooper are gone.Boston optioned Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday to make room for Wilyer Abreu (activated off the IL). Cooper was released earlier this month after batting just .171 in 75 plate appearances.

Manager Alex Cora brought up catcher Connor Wong as a potential first base option against lefties. “Maybe a few ground balls for Wong at first and see how he looks and how he feels if we want to go that route,” Cora said. “But we feel comfortable where we’re at with the roster.”
