Final: Rays 10, Red Sox 8 (F/11) - Red Sox lose competitive extra innings game in Roman Anthony's debut
The Red Sox lose the first game of their series against the Tampa Bay Rays in an 11 inning thriller.
Boston tied things up multiple times throughout the game, but they weren't able to shut down the Rays in extras resulting in the loss.
Brayan Bello got the start, and he finally pitched a quality start in this one. Bello went 6.1 innings allowing three runs while striking out four batters. Despite giving up seven hits, Bello pitched more efficiently only walking one batter.
The Rays were the first team to score getting their first run in the 4th inning with an RBI from Jake Mangum. Tampa Bay extended their lead in the next inning adding on two more runs.
The Red Sox got on the board in the 5th inning as Connor Wong grounded into a double play that brought home a run. In the next inning, Boston tied it up with a pinch hit double from Romy Gonzalez with the bases loaded.

Bello finished his day getting one out in the 6th, and Boston turned to Brennan Bernardino who struggled in this appearance. The lefty allowed three earned runs struggling to find the strike zone while also missing a pickoff attempt at second base. The Rays took a 6-3 lead.

The Red Sox had to play catch up yet again, and they were able to cut the lead town to one run in the 7th. Abraham Toro drove in a run on a ground out to second, and Trevor Story followed it up with an RBI base hit putting the game at 6-5.
Luis Guerrero pitched 2.1 innings in relief following Bernardino, and he only allowed one earned run in the 9th inning.
The Red Sox were down two runs going into their final at-bats, and they were able to send the game into extras with some clutch at-bats. Rafael Devers started the inning with a walk, and Toro put runners in scoring position with no outs.
Making his MLB debut in this game, baseball's #1 prospect Roman Anthony got his first RBI driving in Devers with a ground out to shortstop. And with two outs, Kristian Campbell came up clutch beating out a play at second base to tie the game 7-7.

Aroldis Chapman got the ball in the 10th, and the Rays retook the lead with a sac fly hit from Taylor Walls.
Yet again, the Red Sox had to tie the game with their backs against the wall, and they were able to bring the game to another inning. Down to their last out, Toro grounded a ball to first base, but Johnathan Aranda couldn't make a play which resulted in an error that tied up the game.

The Red Sox then turned to Zack Kelly in the 11th, and their magic finally wore off. Kelly waked his first batter, and Alex Cora decided to intentionally walk Aranda to load the bases.
With Junior Caminero at the plate who was 0-5 on the night at this point, Kelly walked Tampa Bay's third baseman and the Rays took the lead yet again. Tampa Bay added another run with Mangum picking up another RBI, and the Red Sox had to attempt another come back down to their last three outs.
This time, the Red Sox couldn't get it done. Rob Refsnyder walked to start the inning, but a controverisial strike out call on Gonzalez killed Boston's momentum. Cora was immediately ejected following the strike out, and the Red Sox lost the game 10-8.
This gam was madness, and Boston had opportunities to come away with the win even though they didn't deserve to. The Red Sox didn't play well in the field collecting two errors while also allowing the Rays to steal multiple bases throughout the game.
The bullpen didn't execute when it mattered most. After a taxing series against the Yankees, Boston had to turn to undeserving guys such as Kelly to perform in high leverage situations. Playing devil's advocate, the Rays relied on Ian Seymour, who made his MLB debut in extra innings, and the rookie pitched both the 10th and 11th innings picking up the win.
On a bright note, Roman Anthony finally made his debut in this one. Anthony went 0-4 but picked up and RBI and walk.
The Red Sox will continue their series tomorrow at 7:10 p.m.

WHAT'S UP
The Red Sox start another series with the Tampa Bay Rays with Roman Anthony making his MLB debut in right field.
Anthony's promotion was due to Wilyer Abreu having a left oblique strain that puts him on the 10-day injured list. To put Anthony of the 40 man roster, Boston designated Triple-A first Ryan Noda for assignment.
The Red Sox have also called up right-hander Brian Van Belle. They DFA'd Robert Stock for assignment, who pitched in the 9th inning in yesterday's game against the Yankees.
