Final Red Sox 8, New York Yankees 11 - Red Sox allow 3 runs in 10th inning in loss to Yankees taken at BSJ Headquarters (Red Sox)

(USA Today Sports)

Trevor's Game Notes:

Blown Lead: Going into the 9th inning up 8-7, the Red Sox brought in Kenley Jansen to record his second save of the series. With 2 outs and a runner at 3rd, Jansen allowed a double off the Green Monster to Trent Grisham bringing the game to extras. After failing to score a run in the 9th, Chase Anderson allowed 3 runs in the 10th making it difficult for the Red Sox to make their own late-game comeback. Anderson was the seventh reliever Boston pitched in the game.

Home Run Derby: Red Sox and Yankees combined for 9 runs in the first 2 innings of the game. Starter Kutter Crawford began the game allowing 3 straight extra base hits, including back-to-back home runs to Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Boston responded with a solo home run from Wilyer Abreu and a 2-run double from Tyler O'Neill. Boston would get its first lead in the bottom of the 2nd with RBI singles from Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida. Tyler O'Neill was the hottest bat in this game, trying to maintain Boston's lead multiple times throughout the game. O'Neill hit not 1 but 2 solo home runs that put the Red Sox in front (1st home run in the 5th and the 2nd in the 7th).

However, it wasn't enough as Ben Rice and Aaron Judge would record clutch RBI's to keep the Yankees in the game to eventually make the comeback.

The Red Sox will play their final game at Fenway against the Yankees tomorrow on a Sunday Night Baseball at 7:10 p.m.

WHAT'S UP

The Red Sox have won 2 of their last 3 games after beginning the 2nd half with a 4-game losing streak.Boston beat the Yankees in last night's series opener, 9-7.

The Sox trailed, 7-4, entering the bottom of the 7th. Ceddanne Rafaela hit a 2-run HR in the 7th inning to cut the deficit to 7-6. Boston is 11-0 this year when he homers. Wilyer Abreu pinch-hit in the 8th inning and hit a game-tying RBI double. It was Boston's MLB-leading 20th RBI by a pinch-hitter (no other team has more than 15). Masataka Yoshida hit a go-ahead 2-run single in the 8th off of Clay Holmes. He also hit a game-tying 2-run HR off Holmes in the 9th inning at Yankee Stadium on 7/5. Kenley Jansen recorded his 440th career save, tying Craig Kimbrel for 4th most in MLB history.

The Red Sox are “finalizing a trade” to acquire Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen, ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting via X. Jansen is a right-handed hitter, an area of need for Boston. But he has played no other positions except for catcher and DH during his major league career. And so it’s unclear where he fits with Connor Wong and Reese McGuire already behind the plate for the Red Sox.

Trade addition James Paxton is expected to join the Red Sox on Sunday and there’s “a chance” he will be activated before tomorrow’s series finale against the Yankees. Cooper Criswell, who threw 7 scoreless innings in a start vs. the Rockies in Colorado on Tuesday, has been moved to the bullpen “starting today,” Cora said. As of now, the Red Sox starting rotation includes Paxton, Pivetta, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford and Brayan Bello. Crawford starts Saturday here against the Yankees.

Red Sox righty Kutter Crawford threw just 68 pitches over 7 scoreless innings in a road win over the Yankees on July 7. Crawford is 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA (36 ⅔ innings, eight earned runs) and 0.93 WHIP in eight career games (six starts) against the Yankees.

The Red Sox are 5.5 games out of 1st place in the AL East. Entering play on 6/15, they were 14.0 games out of 1st place.

Boston will wear their Nike City Connect Series uniforms today. They’re 34-10 overall when wearing
