Final: Red Sox 5, Yankees 3 - Red Sox defeat Yankees in extra innings thriller with Rafaela hitting the go-ahead home run
Trevor's Game Notes
Late Game Thrills: In the top of the 9th inning down 2 runs, the Red Sox ended up getting the victory against the Yankees in game 1 of their series in New York. Dominic Smith, who came into the game as a pinch hitter, started the rally with a single up the middle, putting the tying run at the plate. With the Yankees down to their final strike, Masataka Yoshida would hit a 2-run home run off Clay Holmes to tie the game.

Justin Slaten pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 9th to take the game into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, Ceddanne Rafaela slugged a 2-run shot of his own to give the Red Sox their first lead of the game.

Kenley Jansen was put in the game in the bottom of the 10th and recorded his 17th save to give Boston the comeback victory. Besides Romy Gonzalez's solo home run in the 5th inning, Rafaela and Yoshida's clutch home runs were the offensive surges Boston needed to get them the victory, and it came when it mattered the most.
Shutdown Bullpen: After a rain delay in the 3rd inning, Tanner Houck was unable to figure out his control when he returned back to the mound. In the 4th inning, Houck would allow 3 runs (1 earned) and get pulled that same inning. Bailey Horn would take over and pitch 2 scoreless innings in the 5th and 6th innings. Cam Booser, who returned to the Red Sox roster from Worcester, pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief as well. Both Horn and Booser did a great job keeping the Red Sox within reach in this game, despite not getting the run support to show it. Justin Slaten pitched in the 9th inning to keep the game tied, and Kenley Jansen recorded the save to seal the game. In total, Boston's bullpen combined for 6.1 scoreless innings in relief.
The Red Sox continue their series in the Bronx Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
