A little something about this game: This is the first meeting between the Celtics and the post-trade deadline Nets. This version of the Nets has the second-worst defensive rating in the league and the 22nd-ranked offense. They’ve lost four in a row and eight of their last 10.
How the Celtics win: Don’t take the Nets for granted. This is a young team full of guys trying to make names for themselves. Cam Johnson, Cam Thomas, Mikal Bridges, Nic Claxton … they all would love nothing more than to make shots, build a lead, and start dancing around on the sidelines. This is an ESPN game for a team full of guys who were either traded, or who feel abandoned by the stars that were going to carry them to a title shot. The Celtics will get hit with everything the Nets have. If the Celtics come out slow, they’ll fall behind quickly.
How the Nets win: The one game they’ve won since getting all these guys together was a game where they shot 43.6% from 3. Again, these guys are young and a few of them are streaky by nature, so the last thing Boston wants to see is something like a 4-6 start from deep from the Nets.
Things I’m looking for:
- Continuing to attack: The Nets are terrible defensively, so when the ball touches the paint, they are guaranteed to make mistakes. Ball movement will absolutely lead to open shots. I know there's going to be a tendency to try to see if this can turn into a working vacation day and win by getting hot from the arc, but the best way to actually make that happen will be to drive and kick. Offense like we saw in the first three quarters against Cleveland will mean no fourth quarter minutes for the Celtics starters tonight.
- Starter cohesion: The Cavs game was the best we’ve seen these guys play together this season. Everyone was starring in their role. I’d love to see them keep it up on the defensive end and force some turnovers to get these young Nets frustrated.
- Grant Williams: I’m literally just looking for him to play. I’ll be looking to see how he responds to his benching against Cleveland and if he uses it as motivation moving forward. He’s an emotional guy who can’t help but talk or show how he’s feeling. Let’s see what he’s got.
