Update: the State Police and Patriots have confirmed the reports.
According to Fox 25 News:
Patriots cornerback Jack Jones was arrested Friday evening at Boston Logan International Airport after attempting to bring two firearms on the plane.
According to Massachusetts State Police, troopers were called to a security checkpoint at Terminal B after two firearms were found in Jones’s carry-on luggage.
25-year-old Jackie K. Jones of Arizona is facing several charges including possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device, according to police.
Jones was booked at the State Police-Logan Airport Barracks and posted bail at $50,000. He will be arraigned next week in East Boston District Court.
Jack Jones was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft.
“We have been notified that Jack Jones was arrested at Logan Airport earlier today. We are in the process of gathering more information and will not be commenting further at this time,” according to a spokesperson for the Patriots.
Jones finished his rookie season with the Patriots suspended by the team, but seemed to have a good spring and got starter reps in the final practice of the offseason.
Jones has had issues before New England, and it caused him to drop in the draft:
A five-star recruit out of high school and after two seasons at USC, Jones missed 2018 spring practices because of academics and was ruled academically ineligible for the 2018 season and the two sides parted ways. Jones was arrested for allegedly breaking into a Panda Express in June 2018. The felony charges were later dropped and he pleaded guilty to a second-degree misdemeanor charge of commercial burglary in October 2018, serving 45 days of house arrest. He was suspended by the Arizona State coaching staff for fighting during practice (November 2020) and missed most of the abbreviated four-game season in 2020, according to pre-draft reports.
BEDARD'S ANALYSIS
Well, we'll know what kind of thin ice Jones is on with the Patriots pretty quickly.
At the very least, this is extremely disappointing since it appeared that Jones had done the work to get back into the team's good graces.
You could say, before this episode, Jones was in position to battle first-round pick Christian Gonzalez for the No. 1 cornerback spot, with Jonathan Jones likely entrenched at No. 2. Whoever lost would be the third cornerback on the field — which puts them in line for a lot of playing time still.
At the very least, Jones could see some sort of suspension by the league, and a demotion by the Patriots. The worst-case scenario is the Patriots don't think Jones ever matures and they release him — sooner rather than later.
That would be somewhat of a blow because it appears Shaun Wade would be next at boundary cornerback, and that's a big dropoff.
Jones has starting ability — especially once he matures into his body — but maturity issues have dotted his past and present. And you have to remember, that due to his wide-ranging college career, he's already 25 years old. That's old for a second-year player.
Players are routinely given a lecture by the coach and some veterans to be smart during the break before training camp. Can't ever recall a player I've covered — maybe David Boston with the Dolphins — getting in trouble with the law on their way out of town.
