Final: New York Yankees 5, Red Sox 1 taken at BSJ Headquarters (Red Sox)

Red Sox bats were quieted in the Bronx, limited to just five hits in a 5-1 loss to the New York Yankees snapping their tw0-game winning streak.

Michael Chavis smacked a solo homer in the top of the third, and the Red Sox didn't score again after that.

Meanwhile, the Yankees used two homers -- a two-run poke from Aaron Judge and a solo shot from Gio Urshela -- to jump in front of starter Ryan Weber, who lasted just 3.2 innings.

New York cemented the victory with a two-run homer into the upper deck in right by Brett Gardner in the eighth.

IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

9:54 Nothing cheap about that one -- Brett Gardner golfs a pitch from Colten Brewer into the second deck to go up by five. Red Sox bullpen had tossed 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, keeping the game in hand.

9:28  Chavis has looked uncomfortable around the first base bag at times this season, but he did a nice job digging out that low throw from Bogaerts.

9:23  Red Sox bats have gone quiet -- just two hits (both singles) over the last four innings.

8:42 Valdez is an interesting piece. Good movement on his pitches and a live arm. He's someone who could be play a bigger role in the near future if he keeps throwing well.

8:30  That's it for Weber, who lasts 3.1 innings,. The damage against him came on the long ball, but also troubling was the four walks. Phillips Valdez on

8:24 Another mistake -- changeup left up over the middle -- and another homer to right. Urshela takes Weber deep.

8:03 Bad combination: a hanging curveball, a super-strong hitter and a short porch in RF. Two-run homer for Aaron Judge gives the Yankees 2-1 lead.

7:56 Sloppy baserunning by Kevin Pillar, who doesn't get back to the first base bag quickly enough and is doubled up by Aaron Judge in RF. Not a good look and happening too frequently in the first week.

7:50 Michael Chavis unloads on a fastball down-and-in for his first homer of the season. Chavis with three hits in the last two games.

7:44 Jackie Bradley Jr. makes a fine catch against the wall on Brett Gardner, though it wasn't quite as deep as he initially believed.

7:34 Jordan Montgomery, making his first start of the season, has yet to give up a hard-hit ball through the first two innings. In fact, Red Sox haven't hit a ball out of the infield yet.

7:23 Strong first inning for Ryan Weber, who gets all three outs on the ground. That's a good sign for him and indicates them he's successful in keeping the ball down in the zone. With this lineup and this ballpark, he's can make mistakes up in the zone.

7:14 J.D. Martinez continues to struggle with the bat. Since a good start in the first two games, Martinez is now just 2-for-21

PRE-GAME NOTES:

  • Mitch Moreland, who was given the night off fully Thursday because of some legs, isn't in the starting lineup, due to the lefthanded Montgomerty but is available to come off the bench.

  • Ron Roenicke said the team has some "green light'' and "don't run'' signs when it comes to base-stealing, but would like some of his players to be on their own -- as long as they exercise good judgement. "I would like the guys to have some freedom,'' he said. "If we have something on pitchers that we think we can run on, we'll continue to do it and be successful. I think it's important to have a running game, but you just have to be smart about it and not run into too many outs. You're going to run into some, but I think it creates a lot of problems on the other side. I think pitchers start to rush to the plate and make bad pitches, so it helps your offense. So there's lots of reasons why I think you should be aggressive on the bases.''

  • LHP Josh Taylor threw his second live batting practice at McCoy Stadium and Darwinzon Hernandez will do so Saturday. Following that, they'll have appearances in simulate games. "After that,'' Roenicke said, "if we think Josh is ready for a one-inning stint, then he could be active shortly after that. Darwinzon, it just depends on whether we need to stretch him out a little bit more and he'd be a little bit behind JT.''

  • Michael Chavis doesn't object to the introduction of seven-inning games for doubleheaders. "That's how they do in the minor leagues,'' said Chavis, "and I'm not too far removed from playing those. I'm curious to see how it's going to play out at the major league level because of pitching depth and the expanded rosters.''

  • Zack Godley will get his first start as a member of the Red Sox Saturday, and facing a strong Yankee lineup in a hitter's ballpark, knows that he'll have to keep pitches down. "That lineup speaks for itself,'' said Godley. "They do what they do night in and night out. The biggest thing is to try to get ground balls, try to let the defense work and just try to limit the damage as much as possible and let our (hitters) go to work on the other side. A lot of guys tend to try to share away from these guys simply because there are who they are and I think the best thing I can do is attack them, try to get ahead, try force contract and try to get them out early.'' Godley contributed four innings in relief earlier this week on the homestand, but feels ready to deeper Saturday night. "I'm looking to extend myself as long as I possibly can,'' he said. "The game dictates how deep you go. If things are going smoothly and I'm getting quick outs, there's a possibility I could go farther.''
