Newcomers start hot: Two offseason additions -- outfielder Kevin Pillar and second baseman Jose Peraza -- began their Red Sox careers in style. Pillar made a fine running, leaping catch in front of the bullpen to record the first out of the game, then added three hits and three RBI at the plate. For his part, Peraza had two doubles, a single, knocked in three runs and scored two. Peraza will need to keep producing if he's to claim the everyday job at second. Pillar will get lots of opportunities -- like Friday -- to play against lefties.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • The 13 runs were the second-most in franchise history in a season opener. They scored 15 in 1973.

  • The Red Sox set a club record for most doubles (eight) on Opening Day while tying an American League record.

  • Kevin Pillar and Jose Peraza became the first Red Sox players with at least three hits in their team debut since Nick Punto in 2012.

  • Peraza became just the seventh Red Sox player to collect four hits in his debut and first since Gabe Kapler in 2002.

  • The six innings for Eovaldo matched his season-high from 2019.
