The Red Sox revealed that two lefty relievers -- Josh Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez -- have tested positive for COVID-19.
Taylor's positive was discovered during the intake process at Fenway when the Sox conducted tests of incoming players on Wednesday of this week. He's currently quarantined in his hotel room, being attended to by the medical staff.
Meanwhile, Hernandez tested positive while in his native Venezuela and will remain there for the time being. Hernandez must test negative twice before being allowed to join the remainder of the Red Sox in Boston.
"Anytime anybody is positive now, it impacts the start of the season just because of the short training camp we have,'' said manager Ron Roenicke. "We'll see how it goes. I can't tell you that (they're) not going to be ready (for the start of the season) because it depends on how far along they are with the stages of the virus. I think Josh is a little farther along. Hopefully, he'll start getting some negative tests back pretty soon and then we'll go from there.''
Roenicke said the Sox hadn't had any discussions about roster moves in light of the two positive tests.
"We want to see medically where they are with our training staff,'' said Roenicke.
The Sox are still waiting on test results from Eduardo Rodriguez, who remains in South Florida after being exposed to someone with the virus.
Roenicke added that the Sox have "one player who is pending, but I really can't say any more than that.''
