Bedard: Patriots fans don't get payoff, but Bill Belichick makes smart move with trade down taken at BSJ Headquarters (NFL DRAFT COVERAGE)

Well, in the end, that wasn't much fun at all.

Thursday night's first round of the NFL draft — like no other we've ever had — was just a reminder that Bill Belichick doesn't care about your entertainment value, or your desire to dream about the Patriots' first draft pick fitting into the system. Not even when he's making draft decisions from Nantucket.

He only cares about doing the right thing for the football team, and he did that when he traded the team's 23rd overall draft pick — the only selection the Patriots had in the first two rounds — for second- (37th overall) and third-round selections (71st overall) from the Chargers.
