With social distancing in place and most states under stay-at-home edicts, there's obviously little guarantee for a 2020 Major League Baseball season -- no matter how it's constructed or where it's held.
But Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke remains optimistic that, eventually, there will be a baseball season -- in some form or fashion.
"Yes, I do. If I'm going with my gut, I do,'' said Roenicke in a conference call with reporters. "I'm hoping. I think if everybody stays with these plans that they're putting out there for us, that we've got a chance to at least level off. Once it's leveled off, hopefully, that curve can start going downhill and maybe we can start thinking about a training camp again.
"I'm hoping that we can do the right things so that we get back on the field sooner.''
Because players had a conditioning base built up from five weeks in spring training, Roenicke thinks they could get ready for a season in a relatively brief time frame.'
"The longer we go, obviously, the harder it's going to be to get (the players) back to where they were (at the stoppage),'' said Roenicke. "I don't think it will take us long to get back; I don't think it will take the full six weeks to get back again.''
