HEADLINES
Revs end regular season on short side: Despite 16 shots, only five of those were on target for New England’s favorite soccer sons, and the 2019 regular season came to a close with a 3-1 loss to Atlanta United. It was only the third time the Revs lost since May 9, and it came against a potent Five Stripes club that The Boys In Blue will see again in 12 days’ time. The playoff-bound Revs finished the regular season 11-11-12, good enough for 45 points — four points better than 2018’s 41-point campaign.
Josef, Gressel put this one away: Not long after the second half re-start, Josef Martinez struck for his 27th goal of the season, getting sprung on a long ball from the defensive third and beating Antonio Delamea into the penalty box. His shot beat Matt Turner, and the Five Stripes were into the ascendency. Eight minutes later, Julian Gressel — the Providence College grad — hit an absolute rocket of a half-volley off the far post and in, wrapping the three points up with more than half an hour to play.
