Analysis: What kind of player have the Patriots acquired in Cardinals OT Korey Cunningham? taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

The Patriots have acquired backup offensive tackle Korey Cunningham from the Cardinals.

Field Yates reported the Patriots are sending a sixth-round pick to Arizona.

Starting to watch some film on Cunningham, but here's what is known about him:

  • He was a seventh-round pick in 2018 out of Cincinnati and is large: 6-6, 318 pounds.

  • He's known to be very strong and earned the respect of teammates and coaches in Arizona.

  • "He’s an offensive line coach’s dream because you can mold him out of clay," former Arizona QB Josh Rosen said last season. "He’s strong as hell. He wants to learn. He’s probably one of the funniest guys I know, and he’s a great teammate. I think he’s got a very, very bright future. Why not sooner rather than later and get him going?"

  • He started six games at left tackle but the Cardinals had him pegged for the right side.

  • ProFootballFocus.com had him with a 60.4 overall rating (out of 100) in 2018 — 57.7 pass blocking, 57.2 run in 349 snaps at left tackle (209 pass blocks). They pegged him for two sacks allowed, 2 hits, 14 pressures and four penalties.

  • He's played all RT so far this preseason as a reserve with a 53.2 rating (65.1 pass blocking). He's allowed four hurries.

BSJ Game Film notes, analysis and video:

  • Ok, so I didn't watch every snap of Cunningham's career to this point, but I watched enough to get a sense of the type of player he is.

  • I'd say right now it's a developmental tackle with starting ability on the right side and the potential to start at LT with development.

  • He's a plus in size and strength.

  • I wouldn't say he's deficient in any area, maybe slightly in athletic ability.

  • At this point, he's a solid offensive tackle. Doesn't appear to have a high ceiling, but I've seen worse players starting in this league.

  • He's tried to develop his kick slide from one season to the next, which was a bit lacking as a rookie.

  • He mostly relies on his size to do most of his blocking although he does have some nice initial quickness and will seek out a pass rusher.

  • More of a catcher as a blocker as opposed to being a strike-first kind of player.

  • Appears to be smart and recognizes and adjusts to defensive schemes.

  • I don't really have a Patriots comp for him. I would say Trent Brown was more athletic for a big man, and he was better in the run game. He's similar to Marcus Cannon but Cannon is more athletic. I would say he's fairly similar to Dan Skipper but I think Skipper has slightly better feet. Cunningham might be better overall at this point.

  • This might mean bad news for Skipper but I have a hard time seeing them going with Cunningham as the lone Week 1 backup to Isaiah Wynn and Cannon. Ideally, I see Skipper as a developmental left tackle, and Cunningham as a developmental RT.
