We'll keep you covered here from the Auerbach Center with the latest picks and big trades over the course of the night and feel free to get things going in the comments as we wait to see what the Celtics do with No. 14, 20, 22, and 51.
7:47: No surprises early as Zion Williamson and Ja Morant go No. 1 and 2 as expected. Willamson begins his NBA career with a terrific interview that should get everyone in New Orleans fired up.
7:53: R.J Barrett heads to the Knicks as expected at No. 3 while DeAndre Hunter goes to the Hawks at No. 4 after they moved up.. Huge roar from the Brooklyn crowd after the Barrett pick. Whispers still around both the No. 5 and No. 6 pick being available in trades from the Cavs and Wolves respectively.
8:06: Garland goes at No. 5 to Cleveland, which gives them a pair of point guards to run the backcourt alongside new head coach John Beilein.
8:16: After a lot chatter about trades at the top of the draft, things have calmed own a bit. Jarrett Culver heads to the Wolves at No. 6 while the Bulls find a point guard in Coby White, which takes one starting job out of the running for Terry Rozier on the free agent market.
8:30: A couple of surprise early picks of bigs by with Hayes going to New Orleans (via Atlanta) and Hachimura going to the Wizards. The Hawks will be very young with plenty of non-shooters in the lineup this year while Hachimura is probably going to be the second best Gonzaga player in this draft.
8:45: First big surprise of the draft comes at No. 11 as the Suns take Cam Johnson, a senior swingman out of UNC who was projected to go in the 20s. Between that and trading TJ Warren and No. 32 for cap room, its been a perplexing night for the Suns to say the least. Cam Reddish goes at No. 10 to the Hawks in what should be a good fit with their young core to develop.
9:09: The Celtics added some wing depth to a deep part of their roster on Thursday night, selecting Indiana swingman Romeo Langford with the No. 14 overall pick. Langford, 19, played through a torn ligament in his thumb last year and struggled with his shot accordingly (27 percent from 3-point range). He did undergo surgery on his thumb after the college season ended but is expected to be ready for Summer League. He’s a crafty scorer who is good at getting to the rim and drawing contact, averaging 6.1 free throw attempts per game.
9:41: Celtics take Matlisse Thybulle out of Washington but immediately moves him to the Sixers for No. 24 and No. 33 overall.
9:55: The Celtics selected Tennesee power forward Grant Williams with the No. 22 overall pick. The 20-year-old is a junior and is built like a tank at 6-foot-7. He has quite the pedigree after taking home back-to-back SEC Player of the Year honors but does not have much of a jump shot (32 percent from 3 on just 1.2 attempts per game). He's a great finisher at the rim and highly efficient around the basket, but serves as a bit of a tweener in the frontcourt. His size and ability to create on offense serves as his biggest questions but he's definitely got a high motor and stood out as one of the best defensive players in the nation this past season. Just how much that translates to the NBA game is the question.
10:09: The Celtics elected to trade their No. 24 pick acquired from the Suns again and send point guard Ty Jerome to the Suns with the selection. The C's also dump Aron Baynes as part of the deal and receive a 2020 first round pick (top-7 protected from Milwaukee) as the return per a league source. That pick is expected to land in the 20s. Phoenix acquired it via the Eric Bledsoe two years ago.
11:17: Celtics take Carsen Edwards at No. 33, a pick they got from the Sixers deal earlier in the night. Edwards, 21, is a 6-foot-1 guard that was regarded as one of the best scorers in the Big Ten last year. He led the league by averaging 23.4 points per game and has shown a very high level of aggression with his outside shot at the college level, taking over 50 percent of his shots from 3-point range during his Junior season. He broke out on a national level during the NCAA Tournament when he dropped 42 points in two games for Purdue on their way to a Final Four berth after bowing out to Virginia. His size, defense and scoring efficiency will stand out as concerns on the next level but he will pack a scoring punch when he gets his chance at the next level.
12:10: Celtics finish up their drafting a few minutes after midnight by taking another small guard Tremont Waters (5-foot-11) with the No. 51 overall pick in the draft. The crafty guard out of LSU has terrific court vision and runs a pick-and-roll extremely well but there are defensive concerns with him due to his size. He will fight for a roster spot or could be signed to a two-way deal.
