FOXBOROUGH — Tom Brady and the Patriots just wrapped up their first of three scheduled minicamp sessions on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. The session ran for roughly two hours under mostly sunny skies — we’ll have more information for you soon, but here are a few quick notes.
— Sony Michel, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Patrick Chung were among those not spotted at the start of practice. UPDATE: Seferian-Jenkins was released, per an ESPN.com report.
— Tom Brady was on the field with his teammates for the first time this spring. He walked up the stairs with fullback James Develin, and got the bulk of the reps at quarterback throughout the session. At one point in 11-on-11 work — admittedly, it was low-intensity sort of stuff — Brady went 14-for-15. Looked as sharp as a veteran quarterback could be at this time of year.
— The two offensive highlights of the session were a deep ball down the sideline from Brian Hoyer to Braxton Berrios, a play where the receiver laid out nicely to make the catch. Jarrett Stidham, seeing limited action, had a nice connection with Maurice Harris on a ball over the middle. Harris had a couple of very nice catches, and looks to be competing well when it comes to a roster spot. On the other side of the ball, Ju’Whaun Bentley had a nice pick, and J.C. Jackson also had a sharp looking pass breakup.
— Isaiah Wynn was on the field with the rest of the offensive line, but when the starting line was out there, it was (right to left) Cannon, Mason, Andrews, Ted Karras and Joe Thuney. Karras got a lot of work at left guard throughout the session with what appeared to be the first and second offensive lines.
— If volume counts for anything, Jerod Mayo was basically the one running the defense throughout the session. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a position coach louder throughout an entire practice — he was barking orders to the entire defense. It’s early, but that group will have his fingerprints all over.
— When the Patriots went to a three-safety set, with no Chung on the field, it was Obi Melifonwu who got the bulk of the reps next to Devin McCourty in what looked like the No. 1 defense. Duron Harmon was in the box. The second consecutive practice we saw this set.
— There were a bunch of college coaches in attendance, including members of the Iowa staff. Deion Branch and Troy Brown were also in attendance working with the receivers.
Much more to come.
