Rooney’s late penalty steals three points from New England: So close, yet just so far from an unbelievable victory. The Revolution, thanks to uber-strong defending, were only a few minutes away from beating DC United for the second consecutive time at Gillette Stadium, but VAR adjudged Brandon Bye — who had a phenomenal game up until that point — to have handled inside the penalty area in the 87th minute. And just as the normal 90 expired, Wayne Rooney — whose influence in the match was kept to a minimum — utilized power and pace to beat Brad Knighton from the penalty spot to pull level. It remained 1-1 for the eight minutes of stoppage time.
