Here's a quick recap of recent Patriots' transactions and their impact on their 2019 salary cap:
1. They signed Jamie Collins to a one-year deal. His 2019 cap number will be $3,000,000. It consists of:
--$900,000 salary - $100,000 of which is fully guaranteed
--$250,000 signing bonus
--$100,000 offseason workout bonus
--$850,000 in 46-man active roster bonuses ($53,125 per game). Collins was active for sixteen games in 2018 -- $53,125 times sixteen equals $850,000.
--$1,000,000 via four $250,000 playing-time incentives (50 percent, 60 percent, 70 percent, and 80 percent). Since he played in just under 91 percent of the Browns' defensive snaps in 2019, these incentives are classified as LTBE (Likely to Be Earned).
Collins has two more $250,000 playing-time incentives (91 percent and 95 percent). They are classified as NLTBE. He also has a $500,000 Pro Bowl incentive and a $500,000 All-Pro incentive. Since Collins did not earn those honors in 2018, they are classified as NLTBE for 2019. If Collins earns all of his incentives he will earn $5 million.
Collins is tied with Brian Hoyer and Rex Burkhead for the 19th-highest cap number on the Patriots. He has the third-highest cap number of any Patriots linebacker and the 11th-highest of any Patriots defender.
2. They also signed core special-teamer Brandon King to a two-year extension. Before this extension, King' 2019 cap number was $1,359,375. It consisted of:
--$925,000 salary
--$200,000 signing bonus proration of his 2018 $400,000 signing bonus
--$234,375 in 46-man active roster bonus ($15,625 per game). King was active for fifteen games in 2018.
Given the minimum salary for a player with King's four credited seasons is $805,000 AND the Patriots' modus operandi of having 46-man active roster bonuses in every multi-year veteran deal, I fully expect we will learn sometime next week this extension has slightly increased King's 2019 cap number. Per Mike Reiss, King's extension added $3.5 million to the deal, making his new money APY (New money divided by new years) $1.75 million and his paper money (total money divided by total years) APY $1,708,333. My projections for King's extension details are:
--$925,000 salary in 2019
--$1,000,000 salary in 2020
--$1,250,000 salary in 2021
--$750,000 signing bonus which will be prorated $250,000
--$250,000 in 46-man active roster bonuses for all three years of the deal. If my projections are right, this extension increased King's 2019 cap number by $250,000.
King becomes the sixth core special-teamer signed for 2020, joining Brandon Bolden, Jake Bailey, Keion Crossen, Stephen Gostkowski, and Joe Cardona.
3. The Patriots signed tight end Benjamin Watson on May 10th and wide receiver Dontrelle Inman on May 13th. I have not learned enough details of their deals to accurately calculate their 2019 cap numbers.
4. On May 8, the Patriots released wide receiver Bruce Ellington. His $25,000 signing bonus will now count as dead money on their salary cap.
5. On May 14, the Patriots waived undrafted free agent (UDFA) wide receiver Xavier Ubosi. His $3,500 signing bonus will now count as dead money on New England's salary cap. By claiming Ubosi, the Jets became responsible for his $10,000 salary guarantee.
6. On May 14, they also waived UDFA offensive tackle Calvin Anderson. His $5,000 signing bonus will now count as dead money on their salary cap. By claiming Anderson, the Jets became responsible for Anderson's $25,000 salary guarantee.
7. On May 16, they waived defensive tackle Frank Herron. There is no dead money resulting from Herron's release.
