PREGAME NOTES:
- It’s do or die time for the Bruins, who need a win up in enemy territory in order to bring this best-of-seven series back to Boston for a Game 7. Toronto is looking to advance past the first round of the postseason for the first time since 2004.
- The Bruins are coming off of a 2-1 loss on home ice in Game 5, a matchup in which they didn’t get the benefit of the doubt on a potential goaltender interference call. Still, the Bruins were flat for most of the night in what was a woefully uninspiring performance.
- Getting some shots on net will be key for Boston in Game 6, with the Leafs willing to surrender the blue line in order to entrench bodies down low. Torey Krug and Charlie McAvoy (seven combined shots on goal during 185:46 of 5v5 TOI this series) need to be much more active, while Patrice Bergeron’s line will also likely be matched up against John Tavares’ crew.
- “We’ve got to throw these punches,” McAvoy said Saturday. “We’ve got to get in their end, and we’ve got to get pressure. We’ve got to forecheck, we’ve got to be resilient. Because they’ve been doing it all series to us. They’re dumping it in, they’re getting it back. They’re going low to high. We know their gameplan, but we’ve got to get some O-zone time and we’ve got to make it hard on them like they’ve been doing to us.”
- Expect Bruce Cassidy to switch up his lines throughout the game, but for now, it looks as though Marcus Johansson will be slotted in with David Krejci, while Karson Kuhlman will slot in for David Backes on the third line. Backes played less than five minutes during Friday’s loss.
- Noel Acciari also appears to be on the outside looking in for Game 6, as Joakim Nordstrom practiced with Sean Kuraly and Chris Wagner on Saturday — with Kuraly taking over the role of center. For now, it looks as though speed will be the priority on Sunday.
- A first-round exit in and of itself would be a massive step back for a Bruins team that finished in a tie for the second-most points accrued in the NHL this season — and has a WIDE-OPEN lane in the postseason now that the Lightning have been bounced. The urgency has to be there at puck drop.
- “Every year writes its own story, so you value it,” Cassidy said on Saturday. “But this is a whole new group, and they’ve got to find their way. That was the message this morning. There was a lack of urgency last night in our play, and at times, it was there, but in general, I don’t think this team has reached where it can get to yet in the playoffs at all, in terms of team play. We’ve had pockets of it. We’ve certainly played well at times … but we have to reach our level if we expect to advance.”
