PREGAME NOTES

  • Boston appears to have dodged a number of bullets on the injury front, as both Torey Krug and Jake DeBrusk are expected to play in Game 3 after exiting Saturday’s 4-1 win early due to injury. Krug left in the second period after taking a hit from Jake Muzzin and slamming into the boards, while Jake DeBrusk was cross-checked in the face by Nazem Kadri in the third period. Kadri was suspended for the rest of the first round.

  • While both DeBrusk and Krug will slot into their regular spots in the lineup, Boston will be without Marcus Johansson for the second straight game, as the winger is still battling an illness — while Connor Clifton will also be out with an upper-body injury that he suffered on Saturday. Steven Kampfer will slot in for Clifton, while David Backes will look to keep Boston’s physical mindset going after Saturday’s slugfest while skating on a third line with Danton Heinen and Charlie Coyle.

  • John Moore appears to be close to returning, as the veteran skated in a regular practice sweater during Monday’s morning skate. If cleared, he would likely replace Kampfer in the lineup, even if Moore is a left-shot D. While Cassidy often tends to keep his blue liners on the same side as their shot, Moore has often slotted in over to the right side when needed this year.

  • With Kadri out, the Leafs will likely roll out a third line with William Nylander centering Patrick Marleau and Connor Brown. That line has generated just one 5v5 goal in 76 minutes of TOI together this season. It will be interesting to see how Mike Babcock will dictate matchups for Game 3, with the Leafs now getting last change on their home ice. Look for the Tavares line to avoid the Acciari line like the plague after getting knocked around for most of Game 2.
