FOXBOROUGH — The injuries, they just keep continuing to mount for the Revolution. This one, however, is sustainable.
First, it was Luis Caicedo (ankle) early in preseason training; he just made his first start on Sunday. Juan Fernando Caicedo had a muscle injury in the final week of preseason which kept him off Brad Friedel’s team sheet until this past weekend. And we know about Andrew Farrell’s eye injury, with the details emerging last Tuesday; he, too, made his first squad of the season on Sunday.
Now entering the trainer’s room? That would be top draft choice Tajon Buchanan.
The rookie attacking midfielder out of Syracuse is in the midst of recovering from a stress fracture in his leg, which he received from an errant kick in training prior to the team’s flight to Toronto at the weekend.
“We’ll know more on Tajon’s timeline,” Friedel said prior to Tuesday afternoon’s training session, “but he does have a stress fracture in his leg, which is very disappointing for him, and for us. Hopefully it’s not too bad, and hopefully it’s in a non weight-bearing area, so he won’t be out too long.
“It was an injury from a while ago, that was not — nor was there any reason to — flag it, and he got kicked in training the other day. It became a little more painful than a normal kick should have become. We had it X-rayed, and lo and behold, there was a stress fracture that showed there.
“It’s actually fortunate that we found it when we did,” Friedel continued. “If he needed a plate or a pin — knock on wood that he doesn’t need one of those things — then that’s a longer-term scenario. Hopefully he doesn’t have too long to go in his recovery.”
Buchanan, a Generation Adidas draft choice out of Syracuse, was the ninth-overall selection in January, and made his MLS debut last Saturday in New England’s 2-0 loss to Columbus.
The Revs should be able to withstand the injury, seeing as the club has multiple attacking options.
