Jabari Bird still remains in a local hospital on Monday morning more than 48 hours after his arrest on Friday night following a domestic incident.
The 24-year-old guard is expected to appear in court whenever he is released from the hospital on charges of domestic assault, kidnapping and strangulation, perhaps as soon as Monday afternoon. Bird and the victim were both taken to separate hospitals on Friday night following the incident, according to a law enforcement source. Bird remains under guard at the hospital, according to Boston Police.
The Celtics released a statement about the incident on Saturday.
“We are aware of the incident involving Jabari Bird and are taking it very seriously. We are actively gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time,” the team said.
BSJ Analysis: For Bird to remain under hospital watch more than 48 hours after the alleged incident seems a bit unusual. To try to get a better sense of what could be going on with the C's guard, Bostonsportsjournal.com spoke with a law enforcement official to understand the situation a bit more.
Is it unusual for a person to be held in a hospital for this long (assuming no physical injuries) after an arrest?
Official: Yeah it is odd. If he got sectioned 12 (Emergency restraint and hospitalization of persons posing risk of serious harm by reason of mental illness), it can be up to a three-day hold. Usually, that doesn't happen to someone who is the alleged aggressor in a crime.
Nothing says he can't check himself in for whatever reason, but at this point, it's likely something mental, not physical (with Bird).
Usually, the hospital wants people out of their facility and into a police holding facility. I assume he's under arrest so he's being watched by cops. Once he's medically cleared (for reasons unknown), he gets booked and taken to court.
