The Celtics didn't add many new faces to their core this offseason, but they didn't need to in the eyes of one Vegas oddsmaker. The Westgate Sportsbook in Las Vegas released their win totals for all 30 NBA teams on Sunday and put the Celtics over/under for next season at 57.5 wins, the second-highest total in the NBA behind the Warriors (62.5 wins).
Here's a look at some of the notable teams in both conferences and how they stack up to the C's in the opening listings.
Warriors: 62.5
Celtics: 57.5
Rockets: 54.5
Sixers: 54.5
Raptors: 54.5
Thunder: 50.5
Lakers: 48.5
Pacers: 47.5
Bucks: 46.5
This is the second-straight year that the Celtics have opened up with the second-highest over/under win total from Westgate. They finished just under last year's mark of 56.5 with 55 wins despite missing Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving for huge chunks of the season.
BSJ Analysis
It's very interesting to see the Westgate list the East with three of the five best teams in the NBA for next year by this metric.
That's probably more of a reflection of how stacked the Western Conference is with talent compared to a weak bottom half of the East, but it's also indicative of some good, but not great squads spread around the middle of the pack in the West.
The Celtics have a sizable gap over the Raptors and Sixers, who are both tied for the two spot. I'm a bit shocked to see how much of a dropoff there is to the No. 4 spot in the East (Pacers). Given their offseason improvements, I would think both them and the Bucks (46.5 wins) would be strong candidates for over bets.
As for the Celtics line, the smart bet seems to be the over here, assuming the team has better health luck this year. Brad Stevens had made a habit of overachieving in the regular season compared to the Vegas projections and with the talent and continuity that this group has in place for next year, I expect that
