Patrice Bergeron underwent surgery to repair his groin 11 days ago and expects he'll be fully healthy by August.
Bergeron revealed he had the surgery Tuesday night in Las Vegas when he spoke with reporters. Bergeron and coach Bruce Cassidy are in Vegas for the NHL Awards, which will be revealed Wednesday night.
The Bruins' center is chasing his fifth Selke Trophy given to the league's best defensive forward. Cassidy is in consideration for the Jack Adams Award given to the best head coach.
Surgery was the least-preferred option for Bergeron, who tried to let the injury heal on its own during the offseason. Bergeron told reporters that once he began working out again, he aggravated the injury.
“Ramping up the workouts was really what it was,” Bergeron said. “It was just one of those things, after I took the time off, felt better, and started working out again, the regular routine of my offseason workouts, and it came back right away.”
The groin injury was one of a few Bergeron dealt with during the season. He missed 18 games, the bulk of which were due to a broken foot. He also was scratched from Game 4 of the first round against the Maple Leafs, which he later revealed was because of concussion symptoms. The Bruins veteran center still had a strong season with 30 goals and 33 assists.
Training camp does not begin until Sept. 10. Even though Bergeron is scheduled to be out until the first week of August, he should have plenty of time to get ready for the start of the regular season.
Noel Acciari also had surgery earlier in the offseason for a sports hernia. Defenseman Torey Krug is recovering from a broken left ankle and is also expected to be ready for camp.
