The Celtics had plenty of success looking overseas last offseason by bringing aboard Daniel Theis and Shane Larkin back to the NBA on minimum deals. With the prospect of limited salary cap room looming as a factor this offseason, Boston's front office will be on the lookout for more cheap talent abroad yet again.
That search has already begun according to international reporter David Pick, in the form of former Pitt standout Brad Wanamaker. The Magic, Sixers, Nets and Heat are among the teams getting a look at the 28-year-old shooting guard. Wanamaker has a deal worth $4 million awaiting him in Barcelona next season if he chooses to remain abroad, so it will likely take some guaranteed money and a roster spot to coax him stateside.
Wanamaker led Feherbence to the EuroLeague Final Four this past season and does a little bit of everything as a 6-foot-4 guard. He's a respectable 3-point shooter (36 percent over past three seasons) and has averaged 13.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists over the past three seasons in Europe.
Adding a veteran like Wanamaker would make sense if
some playing time was to open up in the backcourt for Boston, after a potential trade of Terry Rozier or losing Shane Larkin or Marcus Smart in free agency. He'd likely need to be convinced of a chance at regular bench minutes to sign with a team stateside. Boston's current roster would not necessarily be conducive to that possibility, but that could change quickly.
Second workouts for Jacob Evans and Bruce Brown Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier and Jaylen Brown all had two workouts with the Celtics prior to being drafted over the past few years, so it's always intriguing to see which names get a second look by Boston during the pre-draft process. Two names have surfaced on that front this week in Cincinnati wing Jacob Evans and Miami guard Bruce Brown. I profiled Evans here, but Brown is another intriguing name who is projected to go in the early second round. He is a 6-foot-4 sophomore out of Miami who had a down year for the Hurricanes.
He played just 19 games last year as a sophomore, averaging 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds before missing the final month-plus of the season with a foot injury. His shooting averages were down from the freshman year (just 27 percent from 3), but he was highly regarded out of high school and can play tough defense and handle the ball well. The Celtics have bought low on elite prospects in past drafts with success (see: Avery Bradley) so he certainly fits the mold of the guard that Ainge likes to target. It wouldn't surprise me to see him in the mix at No. 27 or as a potential target in the second round if the Celtics trade their way into the 30s.
Here's a look at potential first-round picks who have been worked out at least once for Boston.
Kevin Huerter, SG, Maryland (Sophomore)
Josh Okogie, SG/SF, Georgia Tech (Sophomore)
Donte DiVincenzo, SG, Villanova (Sophomore)
Grayson Allen, G, Duke (Senior)
Jalen Brunson, PG, Villanova (Junior)
