Will Wednesday morning be the start of something wonderful, or will American soccer fans have long faces yet again?
FIFA’s member countries will meet for the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow early Wednesday morning Boston time, where they will decide on the host nation — and in one bid’s case, nations, plural — for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It’s North America vs. North Africa, and it’s expected to be close.
Here’s what you need to know ahead of the vote:
- 104 votes in favor of a bid will award the winner hosting rights; 207 votes will be cast;
- The four nations involved cannot vote;
- Nations can vote for neither; if the neither category has the majority, the World Cup for ‘26 will not go to either bid, the bidding process will be re-opened, and neither bid can apply to host; voting nations can also abstain
- There is the potential for three rounds of voting;
