Celtics will reportedly sign Jonathan Gibson for remainder of season taken at BSJ Headquarters (Celtics)

The Celtics' depth chart is in rough shape in the backcourt. Kyrie Irving is out for the season. Marcus Smart is likely out for the first round. Terry Rozier is dealing with a sprained left ankle that could probably use some additional rest, while Shane Larkin is still getting over a nasty bout of the flu.

With four games still remaining in the regular season and Kadeem Allen remaining as the only fully healthy "point guard" left on the roster, the Celtics tried to find some additional depth on that front on Thursday afternoon. Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports was first to report that the C's plan on signing point guard Jonathan Gibson to a contract for the remainder of the regular season.

Gibson, 30, played two months with the Dallas Mavericks last season before being waived. He has spent the current season in China, where he averaged 33.7 points per game. The Celtics currently have Xavier Silas signed to a 10-day contract that is set to expire on Friday. The team will use that 16th roster spot (thanks to a hardship exception) to sign Gibson for the rest of the regular season.

Look for him to be handed plenty of ballhandling duties over the next four games as the team tries to operate with a skeleton crew of bodies over the next few days. The bigger question that remains here is whether there is any chance of Gibson making the 15-man postseason roster.

Two-way players aren't eligible to play in the postseason so that keeps Jabari Bird and Kadeem Allen out of the mix. With Irving and Smart likely to be sidelined in Round 1, the Celtics will be thin on the depth chart with Shane Larkin and Terry Rozier. One more injury to the backcourt would make the need for an additional ballhandler essential.

In order to add a player like Gibson to the 15-man roster for the postseason, the C's would need to waive a current player (i.e. Abdel Nader). That seems like a long shot, based on the sweat equity he has built up over the past two seasons, the high praise Stevens has for him and the fact he's still under contract for the next three seasons (for non-guaranteed money). With that said, it's a situation to keep an eye on over the next week as postseason rosters are finalized.

In the meantime, here is a look at some of Gibson's highlights from his time with the Mavs. A complete scouting report will be coming this weekend at BSJ.
