Boston Bruins rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy participated in the team's photo day, but did not practice afterward and will not be in the lineup on Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings at TD Garden.

Prior to the team picture, McAvoy walked onto the ice wearing flip-flops with his full uniform. After practice, coach Bruce Cassidy didn't have an update.

“I have nothing new to report. He’s getting re-evaluated this afternoon,” Cassidy said. “He will not play (Tuesday) and we’ll go from there.”

McAvoy suffered what appeared to be a left MCL injury only 37 seconds into Saturday's 2-1 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens at TD Garden. According to a Boston Globe report, McAvoy was wearing a knee brace on his left leg Monday morning.

This is exactly why Don Sweeney acquired depth prior to the trade deadline. Cassidy has options with Adam McQuaid, Nick Holden and Matt Grzelcyk. If McAvoy is out for any length of time, it's likely Cassidy could reunite Zdeno Chara with Brandon Carlo as the top pair. McQuaid has been a healthy scratch and Grzelcyk is fighting through an injury, but Cassidy said the rookie is ready to go if needed.

The pairs could look like this.

Chara-Carlo
Krug-McQuaid
Holden-Miller

While the team awaits word on McAvoy, Cassidy announced that goalie Tuukka Rask, who has been "nursing" a lower-body injury, will not start against the Red Wings. Backup Anton Khudobin will get the nod. Rask did not practice on Monday and it's uncertain if he'll be ready to serve as the backup on Tuesday.

"We'll see (Tuesday) morning," Cassidy said. "It's one of those ones that's obviously day-to-day. We didn't know it would linger and it has a little bit. If he can not back up, we would have to reach out to Providence."
