BSJ Daily Briefing 02.02.18: Tom vs. Time, The Two Bills taken at Mall of America (Regular Features)

(Bruce Kluckhohn/USA TODAY Sports)

Good morning!

A few random thoughts on some recent Patriots programming while I contemplate if this Timberwolves spectator looks at all worried about the Super Bowl ...

Tom vs. Time, Chapter 4, Facebook Watch

  • No jokes or having fun with this one. I thought this episode was tremendous because it showed the human side of Tom Brady and was very relatable, at least to me and I'm sure to many of you.

  • Look, I'm not going to pretend that I'm as invested in what I do as Tom is as to his profession — well, now with BSJ I am — but lets just say that the time commitment to doing the job how I think it needs to be done in my career isn't too far off during football season from the players and coaches.

  • There aren't a whole lot of family dinners, many family outings get interrupted by the job, there's a lot of travel and time away ... Basically, there aren't many weeks for any of us where we're working 9-to-5 and Monday through Friday with the weekends off. It just doesn't happen. And that's fine, as Brady says, because that's what we signed up for to do what we love to do. But our wives didn't. Our kids didn't. And there's certainly a price that they pay, and we all pay. And it can be very difficult for all involved.

  • So it was refreshing and relatable to hear Tom and his wife talk about the issues that are associated with Tom's job. It's not easy for any of us, and it's never going to be perfect as long as we're working, but we're all trying to do the best we can.

  • Really, you should just watch show. It was very good and very well done. I'm not going to spoil it for you.

  • I thought the look at Belichick's early career was really interesting, his various stops and how he came to end up at each place, including his rise with the Giants. He went from special teams coach to helping out with the defense (and apparently he designed some of the schemes, which Lawrence Taylor didn't know before Bill Parcells told him) and then defensive coordinator.

  • I would have liked to have known more about the timeline when Belichick took the Browns job and then Parcells stepped down from the Giants.

  • Interesting that Belichick twice backed out of jobs (Vikings, Jets) and both moves worked out for him. Good instincts.

  • Loved the footage of Parcells and Belichick interviewing each other when Belichick was with the Browns.

  • A snowstorm likely prevented Dom Capers from being hired by Robert Kraft.

  • On making the deal for Belichick: "I think it was the best decision I've made since I've owned the franchise. That doesn't mean it doesn't come with a lot of hard work and effort. And ... think about managing two people like that."

  • Interesting.

And away we go...
