Celtics reportedly sign Jarell Eddie to a 10-day contract

The Celtics have filled their open roster spot on Friday with G-League swingman Jarell Eddie, according to a report from Shams Charania of the Vertical.

The 26-year-old has spent the 2017-18 regular season in the G-League with the Windy City Bulls after being cut by the Chicago Bulls during training camp. He has been a 3-point shooting specialist during his pro career, knocking down an incredible 50.7 percent of his 3-point attempts this year despite averaging over seven attempts per game. Eddie has averaged 17.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game on the season.

The undrafted forward has spent time with six different organizations after graduating from Virginia Tech in 2014. His NBA shooting numbers have been subpar, he's only seen action with two teams over his NBA career (Wizards and Suns) and he's shot just 30.2 percent from downtown over 31 games with both squads.

The Celtics have already brought Eddie into the organization once before. He was claimed on waivers during his rookie season in October 2014 after he was let go by the Atlanta Hawks in the midst of the exhibition season. The 6-foot-7 forward was let go a couple days later by the C's organization after they were unable to open up a 15-man roster for him prior to final training camp cuts.

“He’s a player that we’ve watched in college at Virginia Tech and in his exhibition games with Atlanta. He’s always a player that has been intriguing to us, and we are just going to evaluate him before training camp ends.

“He obviously won’t learn our stuff that quick, but we’ll put him through some workouts after practice and evaluate him over the next couple days. That’s really all it is,” Ainge said.

Three years later, Eddie will get a shot with the Celtics, for the short-term. The Celtics obviously still have the disabled player exception to add an offensive piece but Eddie could stick around as a shooting weapon for a floundering offense. As I wrote last night for BSJ, this offense needs help right now (29th in offense) and Eddie (on the G-League level) is more than a capable shooter. If those skills are finally ready to translate to the NBA level, he could get a chance to stick around for longer than 10 days.
