The Boston Bruins defeated the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 in a shootout Thursday night at TD Garden. Charlie McAvoy scored the game-winning goal in the sudden-death portion of the shootout. It's the second time this season he's won it in a shootout.
The Bruins were without the services of Ryan Spooner and Riley Nash tonight. Along with Brad Marchand, all three were sent home this morning due to illness. Marchand will be in the lineup.
As a result of Spooner and Nash's absence, the Bruins recalled Colby Cave from Providence and he made his NHL debut. Frank Vatrano, who has been a healthy scratch for eight of the last 10 games, returned to the lineup.
Cave deserved this promotion. He's strong defensively and can play a heavy game. Even though he's only 22, he's become a pro's pro in the AHL. He's played 27 games with Providence this season, posting three goals and 11 assists for 14 points. He played 76 games for the P-Bruins last season, recording 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points.
Observations from overtime

- Laine took a shot after the buzzer and quickly went over and apologized to Rask. Ah, Finns.
- Heads-up play by Cave on that pass to Krug to set up Boston's quality-scoring chance, its first in awhile.
- Matt Grzelcyk's ability to pinch and then regroup and not get caught out of position is pretty strong.
- Delayed entry is working so far tonight. It hasn't resulted in a goal, but the entries have been clean.
