Dion Lewis leads the way as Patriots pound Dolphins, 35-17

FOXBOROUGH -- Dion Lewis powered the Patriots’ offense with the first 100-plus yard game of the season on the ground and the New England defense finished with seven sacks and two interceptions on the way to a 35-17 win over the Dolphins Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Lewis ended with 15 carries and 112 yards, while Tom Brady finished 18-for-28 for 277 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. In addition, Brandin Cooks (six catches, 83 yards, one touchdown) and Rob Gronkowski (five catches, 82 yards, two touchdowns) had big days for the New England offense.

On the other side of the ball, Trey Flowers and Elandon Roberts each had a pair of sacks and Jonathan Jones, Eric Lee and Kyle Van Noy each added a sack of their own. Meanwhile, Duron Harmon and Stephon Gilmore had picks for New England in the win, as the Patriots' defense limited its opponent to one offensive touchdown for the fifth consecutive week.

New England jumped to a 14-0 lead after one quarter on a touchdown run from Rex Burkhead and a touchdown pass for Gronkowski and never looked back, building to a 21-10 lead at the half. The only misstep came on a botched center/quarterback exchange that led to a Brady fumble and a Miami defensive touchdown when Reshad Jones scampered in from 14 yards out.

But that would be the high point of the day for the Dolphins, as the Patriots poured it on in the second half. The Dolphins cut the lead to 11 early in the fourth, but couldn’t get any closer, as another scoring strike to Gronkowski and a quick flip of a touchdown pass from Brady to Cooks (sandwiched around a fourth-quarter Miami touchdown) made it 35-17 to finish the scoring on the day.
