Hi everyone! Thanks for submitting excellent questions for this week's BSJ Patscap mailbag! Would love to hear from you for future editions, so make sure you check out the contact information at the bottom of the page.

@patscap is there any possible way to cut Gilmore after this season? Or are we stuck in the contract?
(Zach Darsch @ZachDarsch)

@patscap What's the cap hit if the Pats were to cut Gilmore and could they pay Gilmore top CB money?
(Sean Kane @SeanKaneNH)

Background information:
Stephon Gilmore's 2018 salary is fully guaranteed. His 2018 cap number is $12,537,500. His 2019 cap number is $13.6 million.

If the Pats were to cut Gilmore before June 2, 2018, his dead money would be $22.9 million ($14.4 million in signing bonus proration, plus the $8.5 million salary) increasing his 2018 cap number by over ten million while eliminating his 2019/2020/2021 cap hits off the books.

If the Pats were to cut Gilmore after June 1, 2018 his 2018 dead money would be $12.1 million ($3.6 million in signing bonus proration plus the $8.5 million salary) while his 2019 dead money would be $10.8 million.

So, it would not save the Patriots significant cap space by cutting Gilmore anytime in 2018.

How long is BAAAAADemosi signed for. What a great find by BB. When can Bademosi be extended?
(The Wolf @CaptMike24)

Since Johnson Bademosi is signed through the 2017 season, he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this year. Bademosi can be extended at any time.

Could we trade jimmy g to cards?? They have multiple pieces pats could work with
(Blake Pearman @/JeffLeoo7420)

Cap-wise, trading away Jimmy G is certainly doable. Doubt the Pats will do so since that would leave them with no backup quarterback, and there may be a stronger market for him during the 2018 offseason.

Will there be enough money to pay BOTH Gilmore and Butler next year with the expected increase in the salary cap?? Can Butler be signed??
(Will Gray @WillGray945)

Yes, the Pats could create the cap space to pay both Gilmore and Butler, especially if they structure Butler's deal like Gilmore's with a low cap number ($8.6 million) in the first year of the contract. I just don't see them devoting that much cap space to the cornerback position, especially when the possibility exists they may tag Garoppolo. My gut feeling is that 2017 will be Butler's last season with the Patriots.

@patscap do you know how much of an incoming players cap hit pats inherit when they trade for a player?
(Matt Koegler @KoeglerMatt

The remaining weeks of his 2017 salary, any remaining 46-man active roster bonuses and any incentives. Please note that per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, “Any team performance-related incentive will be revalued under the 'likely to be earned' rules if the contract is assigned to a new Team through trade or waiver.” So if a player had a Super Bowl incentive and then was traded to the Patriots, it would now be considered likely to be earned because they are one of the league's Super Bowl contenders.

@patscap is Edelman eligible to return in the playoffs if healthy? Do you know if he's on track to?
(Gerry @Gerryonimooooo)

Because he was not placed on injured reserve after the 53-man cutdown day, Edelman is ineligible to return for the playoffs making the on track question moot. Edelman was placed on IR on cutdown day to help the Patriots get down to 53 active players. For what it is worth, I have not heard anything about his progress.

Hi Miguel. If you were completely in charge of the NFL, what one major change to the salary cap or roster rules, would you make?
(Jim Clark @nunoc3)
I would change the 89 percent cash spending over four years requirement to 100 percent over three years. I believe that would force teams to allocate more cash and cap space to the middle-class veterans. More middle-class veterans on rosters and on the field will improve the overall product. Also, I believe a stricter cash spending requirement will stop the recent trend of teams carrying over more and more cap space each year.

will the patriots add the retired @ninko50 at some point? what would be cap implications/cost/etc?
(Matt Thomas @mjthomas99)

I don't foresee Rob Ninkovich unretiring. If Ninkovich did come back, the Patriots would then become responsible for the remaining portion of his $1 million salary and his $25,000 46-man active roster bonuses.

@patscap do you think Pats trade Butler before the deadline??
(Marino @Marino______)

With Rowe still not practicing and Gilmore just now practicing, I don't see the Patriots trading away Butler -- their most reliable cornerback, at least from a health standpoint.

Who do you see being a likely trade target for the pats?
(The Pats Hole @ThePatsHole)

Mentioned the Giants' JPP and the 49ers' Aaron Lynch in a prior mailbag. Going to add Hau'oli Kikaha and Brooks Reed to the mix.

does Langi get paid still or a percentage?
(B.L.I.N.G. @riddallin)

Per the NFL bylaws, teams are not obligated to pay players placed on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. But if they do, their salary will count against the team's cap. I expect the Patriots will treat Harvey Langi the same way they treated Tony Garcia, who is also on the NFI list. Garcia's yearly salary was lowered from $465,000 to the split salary amount of $348,000 after Garcia was placed on the Non-Football Illness list. I project that we will learn in the next couple of weeks that Garcia's salary was also lowered. Please note -- since Langi had already spent seven weeks on the Patriots 53-man roster, 2017 counts as an accrued season for him, so he will still become an RFA after the 2019 season.

If Gronk were to miss another game, would that make the $5.5M incentive unlikely? (would still think $3M would be probable)
(Brett Boss @brett8055

Rob Gronkowski’s $5,500,000 incentive can be earned in one of the following five ways

  1. 90 percent playing-time

  2. Scores 14 touchdowns

  3. Catches 80 passes

  4. Have 1,200 yards receiving

  5. Named first-team All-Pro

If no more personnel moves are made for the rest of the season, what do you project the Patriots will have in cap space next year? -

(LJ @Show1)

League cap

Prior year carryover

Adjustment

Patriots adjusted cap

2018 cap commitment
(After tendering Ted Karras as an ERFA and signing 10 practice squad players to future contracts, the Patriots should have 56 players signed or tendered for the 2018 season.)
