Bruins defenseman Torey Krug has been removed from injured reserve and will be in the lineup today against the Colorado Avalanche at TD Garden. Krug suffered a broken jaw during the preseason and has missed three weeks.
“I’m going to assume he’s a little behind; hopefully not and he surprises us,” said coach Bruce Cassidy. “I don’t think the expectation should be too high for him because he hasn’t played in awhile. I think he’ll play well because that’s Torey and he’s well conditioned and he’s been in the league. We’re going to monitor it.”
Patrice Bergeron remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury and will not play today. He did skate on his own this morning but the medical staff did not clear the veteran forward. The team is hoping Bergeron will be ready to play on Wednesday when the Bruins begin their first road trip of the season against the Avalanche in Denver.
"We want to be cautious," Cassidy said. "We don't want him to be chasing it all year, so let's give him the appropriate amount of time. . . he's not 100 percent and doesn't feel ready, so we'll give him the time that's needed."
Forward Austin Czarnik was removed from IR today and will be in the lineup.
Cassidy's message to Czarnik was simple: "Step up. Do what you're asked. Don't be Bergy, be Czarnik. Play to your strengths and see where it leads. That's the approach we're going to take."
David Backes (diverticulitis) and Noel Acciari (broken finger) have been placed on injured reserve. Also, forward Austin Czarnik (undisclosed) has been activated from IR.
Defenseman Matt Grzelcyk has been assigned to Providence. Even though he'll continue his pro development in the AHL, Grzelcyk made a strong impression in Boston.
"Good," Cassidy said. "He moved the puck, stayed out of trouble, good decisions with (the puck), defended well -- no issues. He was good. He's going down and no one enjoys going down, but he should be going in a good frame of mind, knowing he can play at this level."
