David Krejci and David Pastrnak were thrilled to learn that fellow Czech Jaromir Jagr signed a one-year deal with the Calgary Flames at age 45.
“Did he? No way. Really? That’s awesome,” Pastrnak said. “Good for him.”
Pastrnak, 21, wasn’t even born when Jagr began his NHL career in 1990.
“It’s crazy,” Pastrnak said. “He’s such a legend back home, so it’s good he got another year to play in the best league. He got what he wanted, so hopefully, he’s happy.”
Jagr, a future Hall of Famer, played 11 regular-season games and 22 playoff games for the Bruins during the lockout-shortened, 48-game season after Boston acquired him from the Dallas Stars at the trade deadline in 2013.
He was a childhood hero for both Krejci and Pastrnak.
“It’s good for him,” Krejci said. “At that age, it’s pretty impressive. At the same time, when I’m 45, I have a family; he doesn’t really have a family, so it’s different. I love the sport, but I can’t tell you I’ll be playing hockey at 45.
“He’s a great player. Last season, at 44-years-old, he had close to 50 points [46 points] and that’s pretty impressive. That’s hard to do if you’re in your mid-20s. It’s good to see because I like to watch games when there are superstars on the team, and I know Calgary’s got some good players, but adding Jagr is another level. He’ll bring fans to the seats and people will watch on TV and I’m one of those people.”
Jagr has played 23 NHL seasons and has registered 1,914 points. He’s ranked third in goals (765), fifth in assists (1,149) and fourth in games played (1,711).
