The Bruins placed goaltender Malcolm Subban on waivers Monday in hopes he clears and will report to Providence.
That means Anton Khudobin has earned the backup role behind starter Tuukka Rask.
“We were upfront that there was a competition for the backup spot, but Dobby came in and looked good right away,” said Bruce Cassidy. “He’s well-conditioned, practiced well and played well, so it’s his spot. He earned it.”
Subban, the former first-round pick enters his fifth pro season, hasn’t shown the ability to become an NHL goalie, but Cassidy saw a positive change in the goalie’s development during training camp.
“He’s carrying himself, and looks more comfortable,” Cassidy said. “Malcolm’s always had a certain level of confidence, but he looks more comfortable. Some of that, I would assume, has to do with a good showing (against the Blackhawks) in Boston the other night. He wants to play well for the Boston Bruins and not some other team. He wants to prove he can do it at this level. This camp was good and he was better than he has been in the past.
“If he ends up in Providence, he’ll have to take that next step because there’s a pretty good guy (Zane McIntyre) down there that’s hungry to play too. There will be competition down there too.”
Prior to camp, Khudobin was the odds-on favorite to earn the backup job and he proved he’s ready. The Bruins hope he doesn’t have a poor start like he did last season. If that’s the case, it appears Cassidy is confident that Subban can come up and perform.
Taking attendance: Patrice Bergeron, Sean Kuraly and Paul Postma were all given maintenance days and did not practice with the team on Monday. All three are expected to return on Tuesday. Austin Czarnik has been dealing with a separate health issue and hasn’t been able to practice. Injured defenseman Torey Krug (broken jaw) skated on his own Monday and was sporting a shield to protect his jaw. He's still unavailable to play in the season-opener against the Predators on Thursday at TD Garden. ... The Bruins made a few transactions on Monday, sending Tommy Cross, Jordan Szwarz, Jakub Zboril Peter Cehlarik, Danton Heinen and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson to Providence. Also, Teddy Purcell was released from his PTO. “He did a nice job for us, but the young kids have done a good job,” Cassidy said. .... I’m happy to report that both Dave Goucher and Eric Tosi are safe in Las Vegas. The former radio voice and PR man, respectively, for the Bruins now work for the Golden Knights and were in town when tragedy struck Sunday night.
