The Boston Bruins trimmed their training camp roster and have assigned players to the P-Bruins.
Anton Blidh, Colby Cave, Jesse Gabrielle, Justin Hickman, Zane McIntyre, Zach Senyshyn and Jakub Zboril. Also joining Providence’s training camp, which begins today at PC’s Schneider Arena, are Chris Breen, Connor Clifton, Taylor Doherty, Colton Hargrove and Chris Porter.
Gabrielle is going to be a fan favorite in Providence for his Brad Marchand-style of play. Gabrielle opened some eyes during rookie and main camps, but it was evident he needs to learn how to skate that fine line between being an agitator and an effective player.
“As a young guy he came in and showed he’s close,” said Bruce Cassidy. “He’s got parts of his game he needs to improve, like everyone, but he’s got good pace, gets on pucks and finished well. As he goes through his pro career early on he’ll define what type of player he’s going to be. He did a lot of things well.”
Gabrielle was ejected from last Thursday’s preseason game against the Flyers after he chirped at the referee. Cassidy admits Gabrielle needs to grow up in that area and learn how to navigate his style of play similar to how Marchand learned.
“If he can become a player like Marchand, we’ll have a hell of a player on our hands,” Cassidy said. “It would be awesome but he’ll go [to Providence] and learn.”
Senyshyn still needs to develop in the AHL but his game isn’t too far off. Zboril was too inconsistent during camp and needs to work on that aspect of his game. Both players need more developmental time in the minors.
“They do,” admitted Cassidy. “A year of pro [in AHL] has made Danton Heinen a better player, and [Jake] DeBrusk, you can see the improvement.”
Ryan Fitzgerald survived the first round of cuts and he’ll be in the lineup against the Blackhawks. He’s been one of the more consistent rookies in camp, so that’s why he’s playing another game.
“I thought he’s a little ahead of the other guys, so that’s why we’re going with him,” Cassidy said.
The Bruins host the Chicago Blackhawks Monday night at TD Garden and Boston will likely make more cuts after the game.
