FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots have traded third-string QB Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for receiver and former first-round pick Phillip Dorsett, a league source confirmed. The Colts have now made it official.
Dorsett, 24, ran 4.33 seconds at the combine but was overdrafted by former Colts general manager Ryan Grigson. Dorsett had a some injury issues (missed time this training camp with a hamstring injury), and totaled just 51 receptions and three touchdowns in two years.

The trade was first reported by ESPN.
BSJ analysis
Dorsett at least helps the Patriots address two spots, slot receiver after Julian Edelman's injury, and primary punt returner in the wake of Cyrus Jones' injury.
That being said, not sure Dorsett (5-10, 185 pounds) can play slot receiver in the Patriots' offense. His football IQ doesn't seem high enough (you need to be like Einstein level, not many are). He's probably an outside receiver, which could mean Brandin Cooks can take more reps at slot.
"Small. Speed receiver," said an AFC personnel executive. "Was low production in Indy."
Dorsett is more fast (good for the outside) than quick (a must for Patriots inside players).

Watching some 2016 game film of Dorsett, I wouldn't be expecting too much from him in the pass game. Dorsett does not play as fast as his timed speed, he does not like contact (he complains every time he is touched) and struggles on contested catches.
As far as the kick game, I think Dorsett has some potential there but it will have to be unearthed. The Colts had him field two punts and one kickoff in 2015, but nothing in '16. At the University of Miami, he returned 50 total kicks and didn't have a touchdown.
